Main Sewer Line Cleaning details
A floor drain is easy to forget until it backs up or lets water pool on the basement floor. Fullerton clears basement floor drains, laundry lines and utility sink drains across New Jersey, with an upfront quote first.
Quick answer: Most often, the trap under the floor drain has dried out. That water seal is what blocks sewer gas. Floor drains that rarely see water lose the seal through evaporation. Pour a bucket of water into the drain to refill it. If the smell stays, the drain may be partly clogged or the trap may be damaged.
Floor drains sit at the lowest point of the house, and that makes them special. They catch water from laundry, water softeners, condensate lines and the occasional leak, and they are often the first place a main line backup shows itself. Because they rarely see steady flow, sediment, lint and silt settle inside and harden over time. The trap can also dry out, letting sewer gas drift into the basement. Fullerton drain techs clear floor drains with cables sized for the line, flush out sediment, and check whether water rising from the drain is a local clog or a sign the main sewer line is blocked.
Laundry and utility drains share many of the same problems. Washing machines push a lot of water fast, carrying lint, soap and fabric fibers. Over months, that material builds into a dense mat inside the standpipe and the line that serves it. Utility sinks catch paint, grout, mud and anything else people rinse off in the basement. When the standpipe overflows during the spin cycle or the utility sink drains slowly, our technician clears the line, removes the lint mass and tests with full flow. We also show you where the floor drain cleanout is, if there is one, so you know your basement layout.

We look at the floor drain, laundry standpipe, utility sink and any cleanouts nearby. We ask what has been draining there and what you have noticed. You get an upfront quote before work starts and before any equipment runs.
Our drain tech lifts the floor drain grate and removes loose silt and debris from the bowl. Old grates are sometimes rusted or set in concrete, and we work carefully to free them without cracking the surrounding floor.
We run a cable sized for the drain through the trap and into the line. For laundry lines we use heads that pull lint out. When sediment is heavy, we may recommend hydro jetting to flush the line clean from end to end.
We run water through the floor drain and laundry line to confirm free flow. We refill the floor drain trap so it blocks sewer gas, set the grate back in place and clean the basement area we worked in.
Full basements are standard in much of north and central New Jersey, and many homes from the first half of the twentieth century have a floor drain tied directly into the main sewer line. Some of those basement drains have a backwater valve or an old style check valve that is meant to stop sewage from coming back into the house. Those valves can stick shut with sediment or stick open with debris, and either way they stop doing their job. When we clear a floor drain in an older home, we check for a valve and clean around it so it can move freely.
Down the Shore and in low lying areas, high water tables and sandy soil create different floor drain problems. Fine sand can work its way into drain lines over time, especially in homes that took on water during Hurricane Sandy in 2012. That sand settles at low points and slowly narrows the opening. Freeze and thaw cycles in winter can also send extra water toward basement walls and floors, which tests floor drains that sit unused most of the year. Pouring a bucket of water into the drain each month keeps the trap filled and the line moving.
The price depends on what is blocking the drain, how far down the line it sits and how easy the drain is to open. A grate that lifts out cleanly is quicker than one rusted into the concrete. Laundry lint and soap sludge clear differently from sand or silt, and heavy sediment may need hydro jetting. A backwater valve adds steps. If the floor drain is backing up because of the main line, we clear that instead. You get an upfront quote before work starts.

The washer sends a large volume of water quickly. If the floor drain line or the main line is partly blocked, that water cannot get out fast enough and rises at the lowest opening, which is often the floor drain. Clearing the laundry branch or the main line usually stops it.
A backwater valve is a device that lets water flow out of the drain but closes to block sewage from flowing back into the basement. Some older New Jersey homes have one in the floor drain or main line. They can stick with sediment. We clean around the valve during floor drain cleaning so it moves freely.
Yes. Every load sheds fabric fibers, and that lint mixes with soap and settles inside the standpipe and laundry line. Over months it builds into a dense mat. A lint trap or mesh filter on the washer discharge hose catches much of it before it reaches the drain and is easy to clean.
It can. Shore homes sit on sandy soil with high water tables, and fine sand can enter drain lines through flooding, open floor drains and gaps in older pipe. Homes that flooded during Hurricane Sandy may still carry sediment in low spots. Cabling and hydro jetting remove that buildup and restore flow.
